Halloween was released in 1978. The slasher film, written and directed by John Carpenter, was the debut of one of horror's greatest villains: Michael Meyers. Upon its release, the movie made $70 million, thanks in part to great acting by Jamie Lee Curtis and Donald Pleasance and great score, also by John Carpenter. Its success spawned a massive franchise, making a dozen more movies to date. The franchise is the highest grossing horror franchise in American film history.
