The Story

The Specials released their debut, self-titled album in 1979 on the 2 Tone label. The ska band had only formed two years earlier, but they honed in on their sound quickly, pulling very deliberately from ska and rocksteady while implementing some punk tendencies. To gear up for the album's release, label 2 Tone, which was founded by Specials member Jerry Dammers, did some press to get the word out. One place they advertised was Melody Maker, the now-defunct British weekly. This original Specials advertisement, in excellent condition, is a literal page out of Melody Maker from 1979, backed with a scathing review of The Who's Quadrophenia.
